Position Overview: We are seeking a thoughtful, curious, collaborative, empathetic, creative, prayerful, energetic, unconditionally supportive and enthusiastic Director of Youth Ministry to join our vibrant, mission-focused and “big tent” Christian community. Our youth and their families are generally progressive-minded Christians with a thirst for social justice. The Director of Youth Ministry will shepherd a welcoming and safe community where youth can grow in their relationships with God and with each other.
The Opportunity: We have a strong youth program, but we are not afraid of change. We seek applicants who have ideas on how to continue the parts of the program meaningful to our youth and add new components. We are open to your new ideas and would love to hear them!

Our youth range in age from 11-18 and are a diverse, smart, kind and fun-loving group. The youth group includes members from Orangewood and our African Immigrant Fellowship at our church. Attributes and skills our youth are seeking in a Youth Ministry leader include knowledge about the Bible, spontaneity, intelligence, organized, respectful, understanding, good at creating games, flexible, very funny, outgoing, creative and relatable to teens.
General Expectations, Talents, Skills, & Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be:
- A baptized Christian and active member of a congregation
- Capable of modeling Christian discipleship through words and actions
- Passionate about the faith and spiritual lives of youth
- Comfortable and willing to talk openly about one’s own faith
- Energetic, engaging, and creative
- Comfortable building relationships with youth and adults, including parents, volunteers, and other faith leaders
- Welcoming of persons from a variety of backgrounds, traditions, and identities
- Able to serve as a positive role model for our youth; mature and emotionally secure
- Regularly present in the community, seeking opportunities to interact with members
- Organized, responsible, dependable, honest, mature, and accessible
- Able to take initiative and be a self-starter, with strong follow-through
- Willing to comply with child safety policies at all times (including regular background screening and training)
- Able to participate in training events and professional development opportunities as available
- Maintaining safe boundaries within professional relationships
- Proficient on social media platforms
- Experienced in working with teens 6th grade and older
- At least 22 years old with a high school degree
- Some college preferred in a field related to ministry, counseling, teaching, or experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or a related field
- Mainline Protestant theology (membership) preferred but not required
- Bilingual in Spanish or Swahili is a plus, and definitely must be able to navigate communication with bilingual families
Director of Youth Ministry responsibilities:
- Mentoring middle and high school aged youth
- Fostering the spiritual formation of middle and high school aged youth
- Building community for youth and lay youth advisors to grow in spirit, self- awareness, love of God, and appreciation for all people
- Developing authentic and appropriate relationships with youth and parents and lay youth leaders representing a wide variety of identities (racial, ethnic, economic, sexual orientation and gender identity, family structure) through deep listening, nonviolent communication skills, openness to new ideas, regular solicitation of feedback, collaboration, and outreach
- Designing, leading and attending weekly youth group programs, scaffolding activities for different learning modalities and preferences, and diversifying every program for different interests
- Organizing and leading service projects and special events (lock-ins, field trips, fundraisers) and youth mission trips
- Communicating regularly with youth, lay youth leaders, and parents through texts, calls and emails
- Marketing youth events to the wider church community through monthly newsletter articles, announcements during Sunday worship, posts on social media and the church website, etc.
- Recruiting, training and supporting the leadership development of lay adult youth advisors
- Working collaboratively with youth to design youth-led worship services
- Taking an active interest in participating youths’ lives inside and outside of church
- Attending Sunday morning worship and other church events and engaging youth in making meaning from spiritual traditions, intergenerational community and community service
- Attending staff meetings and retreats and collaborating with church staff on programs, worship themes, and social justice projects
- Praying for our youth, our parents, our lay youth advisors, our community and our world.
Reports to: Orangewood Presbyterian Church Pastor Ken Page
Works collaboratively with: Pastoral and program staff, lay youth leaders, parents and youth, and all relevant church committees, including the Christian Education committee and Mission committee
Hours: 20 hours/week, including Sunday morning worship, evening and weekend youth events, staff meetings and church committee meetings
